Monday, May 7, 2007

This film is produced by Subhash Ghai under the banner of Mukta Arts Ltd. Chilean-Indian model Jennifer Mayani is also the film playing the role of Jenny.
Rajan Malhotra is a proverbial bookworm, forever lost in studies and completely oblivious to the frolicking of a college dude. He hails from a well to do background and his parents are constantly worried due to his somber nature and his lack of interest in any extra curricular activities.
While Raju Malhotra has absolutely no time for studies as playing notorious pranks on others takes up most of his time on a daily basis. His father constantly ridicules him for his wayward ways...

Cheeni Kum

(literally, less sugar) is a Bollywood film being made by advertising executive and debutant director Balkrishnan. The story is being touted as a sarcastic love story.

The film's shoot has started on 6 April 2006 and is supposed to be completed in 3 months. Ilaiyaraaja is composing the score for the film and it marks his return to Bollywood film music after a long break. A part of the film is shot at Qutub Minar in New Delhi.

Guru

Guru unfolds with the story of a simple young villager, who has the nerve to fly high and the vision to grow. Grow bigger than life itself.
Grukant Desai, who hailed from a small village named Idhar in Gujarat, was the son of a headmaster. Although his father strongly believed that dreams and reality did not go hand-in-hand, Guru was too rooted in his dreams, which grew with him everyday. Raving to explore opportunities, he left behind his father's mental setup and went to Turkey to work for an oil company. His hard work and determination soon earned him praise and promotion. But life was meant to be beyond the small success and it was this foresight which brought him back home. He wanted to work for himself. He wanted to write a success story of his own.
Directed by Mani Ratnam, who has written the script with Suhasini Mani Ratnam and Vijay Krishna Acharya, Guru is said to be a mature love story. Shooting for the film took place in Turkey and Badami, Karnataka, as well as in Chennai and Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The music is composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics by Gulzar. Cinematography for the film is handled by Rajiv Menon. Current reports state that the film is based on the life of India's biggest petrochemicals tycoon, Dhirubhai Ambani. With choreography by Saroj Khan and Brinda, Guru, produced by Ratnam and G. Srinivasan, is to be released on January 12, 2007.
GURU ranks amongst Mani Ratnam's finest attempts. In fact, it wouldn't be erroneous to state that the film is at par with his most accomplished works like NAYAKAN, AGNI NAKSHATRAM, GITANJALI, ROJA and BOMBAY. Every sequence in GURU bears the stamp of a genius and the outcome is tremendous.
Guru has a music which would be a Hit with the classes from Day One. And it also has some numbers, which would be Hit with the masses instantly. Guru's music has the potential to make it Big, real Big. As a bonus you also get five A R Rahman hit songs from the past in this album.
Abhishek Bachchan performance in GURU is world class and without doubt, a shade above his career-best work in YUVA. From a sharp teenager in Turkey to the biggest entrepreneur of the country, Abhishek handles the various shades this character demands with adroitness. Aishwarya Rai too stuns you with a powerful performance. Mithun Chakraborty is in form after a long, long time. Madhavan's role could've been stronger. Vidya Balan too suffers due to a weak characterization, but makes up with a confident performance. Arya Babbar is first-rate in a brief role. The film has a number of characters, but the ones who register a strong impact are Roshan Seth, Manoj Tyagi and Sachin Khedekar.
On the whole, Guru the film hinges on greatness, but decides to play it safe. it really had the potential to be Fantastic.

Salaam-E-Ishq

A film with six stories, each having an effect with the other. Similar to Love Actually and Crash. All the stories are about relationships between a couple and all have meanings. Each expects to raise a subject and give a solution. Aakhri Saans Tak (Till Death Do Us Apart)
Vinay (Anil Kapoor) and Seema (Juhi Chawla) are a happily married middle-aged couple with a couple of kids in tow. Theirs is the idealistic marriage that many desire. However, as with all good things, thorns afflict this beautiful bed of roses, and it takes a sacrifice or two to bring the family back together. Vinay may have it all, the stunning wife, the fantastic job, and the loving children, but he becomes bored and desires more. Vinay meets Anjali (Anjana Sukhani) and in her he sees what he is missing. This extra-marital affair, as expected, causes problems in his marriage. But all is well if it ends well.
Tehzeeb [Vidya Balan] wakes up in the morning to find a small diamond pendant by her bedside. It's an anniversary gift from her romantic husband Ashu [John Abraham]. Things take a turn when Tehzeeb is involved in a tragic train accident. She loses memory!
Raju [Govinda], a cabbie, meets his 'dream girl' Stephanie [Shanon Esra], who's come looking for Rohit [Kushal Punjabi], her boyfriend, in India. Rohit decides to marry an Indian girl of his parents' choice, while Stephanie gradually falls in love with Raju.
Vinay [Anil Kapoor] leads a perfect life. He has a loving wife Seema [Juhi Chawla] and two kids. Also, a perfect job in London. But things change when he bumps into Anjali [Anjana Sukhani]. Anjali comes from a world that Vinay only dreams of. Vinay's life undergoes a tumultuous change.
Kamini [Priyanka Chopra], an item girl in Bollywood, aspires for the coveted heroine's role in a Karan Johar film. She devises a plot to change her image by announcing that she's into a serious relationship with a fictitious character Rahul. Suddenly, Rahul [Salman Khan] enters the scene from nowhere!
Shiven [Akshaye Khanna], the most eligible bachelor in New Delhi, is engaged to get married in the next 10 days. But he develops cold feet. He wants to break off the engagement. And he does so by hurting his fiancé Gia [Ayesha Takia] in the bargain. Gradually, he begins to realize that he is incomplete without Gia.
Ramdayal [Sohail Khan] is a middle class Haryanvi, married to Phoolwati [Isha Koppikar]. No matter how and where Ramdayal tries to fulfill that burning desire, something goes wrong.
Of the twelve important characters and the sundry supporting ones, Govinda [suits the role and also does well], Akshaye Khanna [exceptional], John Abraham [dependable], Vidya Balan [wonderful], Shanon Esra [pleasant surprise] and Juhi Chawla [credible] leave a mark.
After the impressive score in "Don", the troika of Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa come up with another imposing offering in "Salaam-e-Ishq", a film that deals with "six different couples, 12 different lives and one common problem - love". Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy were undoubtedly the leading composers of 2006 ("Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna" being the other score) and "Salaam-e-Ishq" proves that they are one of the best in business in Bollywood right now.
Akshaye, John and Vidya emerge as the clear winners in this star-studded fare. Akshaye is mind-blowing. Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla rely on their own sensibilities and experience as actors to deliver touching performances.Priyanka Chopra showcases her flair for comedy. Salman Khan's services are surprisingly underused. Govinda gets a good deal of footage and does an adequate job. Shannon Esra has an attractive screen presence, but cannot act.
All up where does that leave SALAAM-E-ISHQ? Well like I said the movie is a

Namastey London

The intrinsic message of ‘Namastey London’ is that true love means giving, rather than demanding. The movie’s protagonist Arjun (Akshay Kumar) is the embodiment of this.
Jazz (Katrina Kaif) is a brat, born and brought up in Phoren. She thinks partying and drinking in pubs is all that there is to life. Here, Papa Manmohan Singh (Rishi Kapoor) enters the scene and demystifies the generation gap. Now, Papa takes Jazz on a joy ride to India where he forcefully makes her marry apna desi munda Arjun (Akshay). Later she educates dad that this wedding does not stand a chance to be authenticated in UK, reason she likes someone else (Clyde Stenden).
Arjun takes the whole movie on his swing in the second half as he applies a simple strategy to win back Katrina. The character does not do anything extraordinary which makes it even more believable (Ajay Devgan of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam). The movie draws sympathy to all its characters in pieces. Initially, people feel for Jazz aka Jasmeet (Katrina Kaif), then towards Arjun (Akshay Kumar), Manmohan Singh (Rishi Kapoor) etc.
NAMASTEY LONDON fits the description of a true-blue Hindi film to the T. Writer Suresh Nair’s screenplay is most convincing, the writing is foolproof, with no loose ends. Only thing, while the first hour moves at a lightening pace, the pace drops in the second half. In fact, minimal trimming in the post-interval portions would only make the narrative tighter. Another aspect that might curtail its prospects [at smaller centres mainly] is the generous usage of English language at vital points.
Himesh Reshammiya’s music is excellent. The tunes come instantly on your lips and what elevates the songs are its picturization. ‘Chakna Chakna’ and ‘Dilruba’ are compositions that merit a mention. Jonathan Bloom’s cinematography is exceptional. The D.O.P. does complete justice to the stunning locales of U.K. as also the lush green fields of Punjab. Dialogues [Ritesh Shah, Suresh Nair] are natural to the core.
Akshay Kumar certainly leaves his mark throughout the flick. One of the coolest performances of the star. Katrina justifies her role, duly because of the accent she carries. She authentic for the part she's playing. Rishi Kapoor has reinvented himself. Clye Stenden too plays his part with utmost ease.Upen Patel is getting better and better. Surprisingly, Riteish has done maximum justice to his special appearance. Director Vipul Shah curbs down his tendency to stretch melodrama, as seen in Waqt: A Race Against Time, to a noticeable extent in Namastey London. On the flip side, the jokes are not always funny and Himesh Reshammiya's songs show up more often than not.
Overall, NAMASTEY LONDON, a complete family entertainer...

Delhii Heights

Abi [Jimmy Shergill] and Suhana [Neha Dhupia] are a newly-wed couple who live in a building complex called Delhii Heights. They work for rival companies. In the same society live Timmy [Om Puri], his wife Ruby [Kamini Khana] and their daughter Sweety. Abi’s friend Bobby [Rohit Roy] and his wife Saima [Simone Singh] also live in the same complex.
Then there is Lucky [Vivek Shauq], a cricket bookie, a hilarious character in itself. Also, there are four boys, residents of Delhii Heights, who keep running after girls and pulling each others' legs.
The material hasn’t been explored to the optimum. An exciting screenplay would’ve only taken the graph of the film upwards. Also, a number of scenes are unnecessary and seem forced in the narrative. The writing lacks vision.
Jimmy Shergill is a complete natural. Neha Dhupia evidently seems conscious of the camera at all times, and Rohit Roy manages to emote.
Music [Rabbi Shergill] is pleasant. ‘Tere Bin’ is the best track of the enterprise; its one number you carry home after the show has concluded. Cinematography is striking. Dialogues don’t leave much of an impact.
Overall, Delhii Heights, a movie which you won’t enjoy...

Ta Ra Rum Pum

Siddharth Anand's Ta Ra Rum Pum plays on every human's ultimate fantasy to conquer against all odds and take home the trophy. Here the trophy stands as a metaphor for the realisation of one's most precious dreams. And that is precisely what makes Ta Ra Rum Pum a universal subject to identify with and feel for.
After the runaway success of Salaam Namaste, director Siddharth Anand’s Ta Ra Rum Pum is a YashChopra Production. Needless to say, this one has Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee in the lead. The film carries a social message for all without losing the commercial aspect of Yash Raj films. Ta Ra Rum Pum’s story is about love, inspiration and the 'never say die' spirit.
Saif plays Ranveer aka RV in the film. He starts out as a pit stop tyre changer and goes on to make it big with the help of Harry (Jaaved Jaffery), his manager. No Egglactly from Jaaved this time. He is seen a meticulously crafted serious role. He falls in love with Shona aka Radhika (Rani Mukherjee). He gets an opportunity to show some moves along with Radhika in the romantic numbers. Success follows soon and he becomes the number 1 race car driver in U.S.A. as well as the proud father of two kids, Priya (Angelina Idnani) and Ranveer (Ali Haji).
Mr Hero beomes irresponsible and takes a huge loan to buy a Merc and a lavish house. Fate changes and Saif has great fall from his career heights due to an accident. He is left jobless and bankrupt. Mad in love, Radhika had left her education incomplete and the consequence is that she has to work in a low profile job.
Vishal-Shekhar are back to give another hit to the masses with their melody. The soundtrack offers no surprises and has a typical Yash Raj feel in all its songs.
Saif Ali Khan indispensable. His spontaneity is utterly disarming and distracting. He plays RV -- a huge racing star, with amusement as if to say 'big deal' not losing his boyishness even during stressful times. Rani enacts the role of the mother/wife proficiently. Jaaved Jaaferi is first-rate in a serious role. Bharat Dabholkar is efficient. Victor Banerjee suits the character. Shruti Seth is alright. Angelina Idnani and Ali Haji are adorable. Director Siddharth Raj Anand is only getting better with every film.
Overall, Ta Ra Rum Pum is a feel-good family entertainer with good looking actors, thrilling car chases, playful melodies (Vishal-Shekhar) and pretty

Yatra

Yatra is a journey of a person whose claim to fame is interrupted by his past which comes in the way of his present. Directed by Gautam Ghose, Yatra comes across a strong subject that of a prostitute and its presence in the minds of the people. The movie has three people who hold its fate; Nana Patekar, Rekha and director Gautam Ghose who virtually takes care of most of the departments like cinematography, editing, screenplay and editing of the film.
Nana Patekar plays Dasrath Joglekar, a renowned writer. He is on his way to Delhi to receive the prestigious Literary Award. On the way, he meets one of his ardent fans Nakul Vaid, who is a filmmaker by profession and is devoted to Dasrath's pieces of writings. They discuss about the novels that Dasrath has written and dig the past by striking a conversation about one of his famous novel’s Janaza. Lajvanti (Rekha) is a prostitute and Janaza is all about her. After receiving the award, Dasrath moves on to explore the life of Lajvanti yet again. He starts for his hunt without informing anyone from his family.
Music [Khayyam and Goutam Ghose] is equally uninteresting. Cinematography is of standard, although the color tones tend to get dark at times. Dialogues are wonderful and are sure to be appreciated.
Nana Patekar and Rekha fail to impress. Nana delivers a mediocre, uninspired performance.
Overall, YATRA is a poor fare.

Govinda on dance floor

Actor-turned-Govinda is trying to learn salsa and jive dance to regain his lost image of a good dancer in the past. The actor knows that dance lessons and their regular practice will certainly help him revive his acting career by turning him slim and look young. Though he has come back to movies yet he hasn't succeeded in carrying the audience with him. His acting skill in his recently released 'Salam-e-ishq' has failed him miserably at the box office.

Hrishita Bhatt is back on the celluloid though after a long hibernation. She quips, " There is no harm in exposure if it's done beautifully. However, this depends on how it is shot and with whom one is working."
